There has been a tie for the best mattress topper brand in this year’s survey: The White Company and Ikea both get the highest customer score – with 77% a piece.

The White Company received the highest rating for comfort by far, but their mattress toppers don’t come cheap – many costing more than £100.

Ikea might not have scored as highly for comfort, but it sails ahead of others when it comes to value for money, receiving the highest rating for this.

Following very closely behind the tie for first place is another tie: both John Lewis and Marks & Spencer got a customer score of 76%, matching each other to get second-place.

Trailing behind at the bottom of the table are Dunelm and Silentnight, with 71% and 69% respectively. These is still respectable customer scores, but our survey just shows that there are better options, often for less.

Should you buy a mattress topper?

If you can’t afford a new mattress, or don’t want to replace the one you’ve got, the right mattress topper can make your current bed feel much more comfortable.

As the name suggests, they sit on top of your mattress, offering a layer of memory foam or extra padding.

In our 2018 survey of 1,767  members who own a mattress topper, 32% said their topper made their mattress much more comfortable, while 42% said it made their mattress a little more comfortable – meaning three in four thought it made their mattress more comfortable overall.

You can buy a mattress topper for as little as £20, although most cost more than that.

How we rate brands

To find out which are the best and worst mattress topper brands, in April 2018 we asked 1,767 members who own a mattress topper to tell us about it. To work out customer scores, we asked what brand members owned, whether they were satisfied with it and whether they would recommend it to a friend. We also asked them to rate their mattress topper for comfort, value for money and how well it matched the product description.
