 verdict: Brilliant at brightening carpets

This Vax is simply brilliant. It does an excellent job of deep cleaning and drying carpets, making even soiled, worn-out carpets look clean and bright again. It gets right up against skirting boards and into awkward corners, leaving no area untouched. It could be easier to use, but it’s unparalleled cleaning skills mean it’s a deserving Best Buy.

Pros
  • Excellent at deep cleaning and brightening carpets
  • Brilliant at drying
  • Cleans close to walls and corners
  • Quick clean function for regular cleans
  • Pre-treatment wand
  • Hard floor cleaning attachment
  • Upholstery cleaning tool
Cons
  • Quite heavy and noisy
  • Hard to use
  • Doesn’t completely remove tough wine and coffee stains
  • Difficult to remove the brushbar

verdict: Excellent for homes with pets

This Bissell’s unmatched cleaning ability makes it a well-deserved Best Buy. Not only is it easy to use, it’s brilliant at deep cleaning and drying carpets, making the most weathered carpets look bright and refreshed. Other carpet cleaners clean closer to skirting boards, but this one is still a worthy purchase.

Pros
  • Brilliant at deep-cleaning and brightening carpets
  • Excellent at drying
  • Easy to use
  • Express-clean mode
Cons
  • Quite heavy and noisy
  • Bad at removing stains

Vax Rapid Power Plus Carpet Cleaner review

 verdict: Exceptional cleaning power

This Vax is certainly up to the challenge of cleaning the most neglected carpets. It leaves carpets near-dry and it cleans right up to the skirting board. However, it just misses out on our Best Buy recommendation because it’s not the easiest to use, partly due to it being so heavy.

Pros
  • Excellent carpet washing
  • Won’t leave carpets wet
  • Cleans along walls effectively
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Bad at tackling dried in stains
  • Noisy

Bissell StainPro 4 20686 review

Test score

verdict: Not good enough at cleaning carpets or stains

Despite being called the StainPro 4, it’s exceptionally bad at tacking tough stains and definitely doesn’t remove them permanently. This model also isn’t very good at deep cleaning carpets. It’s not all bad though; it’s easy to use, good at tackling mud stains, and leaves carpets near-dry.

Pros
  • Brilliant at drying
  • Easy to use
  • Not too noisy
Cons
  • Not great at cleaning
  • Bad at removing stains

Bissell StainPro 6 20096 review

verdict: One of the worst for stain removal

For a carpet cleaner called the StainPro, it’s disappointingly bad at tacking tough stains and definitely does not remove them permanently. Otherwise, this model is good at refreshing and drying carpets plus it’s easy to use.

Pros
  • Cleans carpets well
  • Brilliant at drying
  • Easy to use
  • Not too noisy
Cons
  • Bad at removing stains

Vax Platinum SmartWash Carpet Cleaner review

Test score

verdict: Good, but not the best

The Vax Platinum SmartWash is a joy to use, but its cleaning is disappointing – it’s worse at cleaning carpets than cheaper alternatives, including other carpet cleaners from Vax. Although its motion-sensor technology makes spring cleaning feel effortless, you can buy better.

Pros
  • Triggerless design works well
  • Leaves carpets dry quickly
  • Attachments for upholstery and tricky crevices
Cons
  • Not good enough at doing a deep refresh of your carpet
  • Expensive

Test score

 verdict: Unsatisfactory cleaning

This carpet cleaner does a fair-to-middling job of lifting grime out of tired carpets and it’s good at sucking up excess water to help them dry. But we expected a little more, and a Best Buy will do a better job of cleaning carpets.

Pros
  • Excellent at drying
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Bad at deep cleaning
  • Struggles to remove stains
  • Noisy

Rug Doctor Deep Carpet Cleaner review

 verdict: Satisfactory, but no better

While this Rug Doctor looks the part, our tests showed that it’s no better than many cheaper machines, and you’ll get cleaner carpets with other models.

Pros
  • Tackles muddy stains
  • Good at drying
  • Gets close to walls
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Average carpet cleaning
  • Noisy
  • Heavy

 verdict: Can’t clean properly

The only good thing about the ReadyClean is that it doesn’t leave carpets soaking wet. However, it doesn’t leave them looking clean either. You won’t be left with the bright, rejuvenated carpets you desire. It’s easy enough to use but not worth buying.

Pros
  • Good at drying
  • Not heavy
Cons
  • Below-average cleaning
  • Doesn’t get close enough to walls
  • Bad at tackling stains

 verdict: Better cleaners are available

This carpet cleaner isn’t bad, but it struggles to match better ones because of its mediocre cleaning. It’s not the most user-friendly, either. We recommend looking elsewhere.

Pros
  • Decent deep-cleaning
  • Easy to see water level in tanks
  • Comes with a handheld brush attachment
Cons
  • Water tanks are annoying to remove
  • Cleans unevenly

Rug Doctor FlexClean All-In-One Floor Cleaner review

verdict: Not one for your shortlist

The FlexClean will dry your carpets quickly but unfortunately it doesn’t do a good job of actually cleaning them. It’s fairly easy to use but, at this price, we expect much better carpet cleaning results.

Pros
  • Good at drying
  • Gets close to walls
Cons
  • Bad at cleaning carpets
  • Noisy

 verdict: Jack-of-all-trades, master of none

We were disappointed with the cleaning abilities of this Bissell. Its soft, mop-like brush can’t scrub dirt out of carpets like other models with tough brushes can. If it wasn’t so good at drying up after itself, it might be a Don’t Buy.

Pros
  • Good at drying
  • Satisfactory vacuuming
  • Quieter than most
Cons
  • Very poor at carpet washing and removing dried-in stains

Tower T146000 TCW10 Carpet Washer review

 verdict: A towering failure

The Tower T146000 TCW10 Carpet Washer teeters precariously close to being a Don’t Buy because of its poor cleaning. Simply put, it’s hard to find a carpet cleaner that will do less to remove grime, stains and allergens from deep in your carpet pile. We recommend you look elsewhere.

Pros
  • Dries carpets quickly
  • Easy to move around
  • Gets close to the wall
Cons
  • Poor at cleaning
  • Loud
  • Some ease of use problems.

Numatic Henry Wash HVW 370 review

 verdict: Terrible carpet washing ability

This Henry is one of the worst carpet washers we’ve tested, only narrowly missing out on being labelled a Don’t Buy. Not only is it hard to use but it fails to give carpets a thorough clean.

Pros
  • Good at drying
Cons
  • Terrible carpet washing ability

Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner review

Which? verdict: If you’ve got the budget and you regularly find smaller stains, marks and spills on your carpets, then the Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner is certainly worth considering. But if you need to clean a bigger area, rather than being limited to smaller stains, you might want the flexibility of a larger machine that you push along.

The Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner did a great job of removing both old and fresh stains from my carpet. It’s compact enough to store easily and has an extendable handle, similar to that of a suitcase, to make it simple to wheel around. It’s a lot more expensive than a bottle of carpet cleaner and a cloth (though cheaper than a Best Buy conventional carpet washer), but if your carpet regularly picks up stains it could be a good option.

Pros
  • Removes fresh and old stains
  • Good for refreshing grubby spots of carpet
  • Easy to move and store.
Cons
  • Noisy
  • Hard to measure the cleaning fluid accurately
  • Carpet takes 24 hours to dry.

verdict: Poor performance on carpet stains

We were disappointed with the Vax ONEPWR Spotless Go spot cleaner when we used it on our own carpets. It didn’t lift stains as effectively as other spot cleaners we’ve tried before, and since it comes at a rather steep price, we were left wanting more.

Pros
  • Cordless design is handy
Cons
  • Didn’t make much of an impact on stains
  • Frustrating to transport

verdict: Banished mud from our carpets, but disappointed elsewhere

The Bissell SpotClean Pro did a good job at shifting mud stains from our carpet, but it isn’t easy to use and its stain-shifting performance wasn’t great in our harder tests. You can get a bottle of stain-remover for a fraction of the price, so forking out for the SpotClean Pro feels like serious overkill.

Pros
  • Easy to handle and assemble its parts
  • Good mud removal
Cons
  • Didn’t budge wine and coffee stains
  • Frustrating to carry around
